With the start of the Major League Baseball season postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, we here at The Denver Post took a look at how the Rockies would fare in MLB The Show 20 on PlayStation 4. We will have a story for every game that had been scheduled until real-life baseball returns. Here’s a look at the virtual Rockies’ preseason preview. Entering Wednesday’s game, the Rockies were 17-5.
SAN FRANCISCO — It was almost another win for the Rockies. Almost.
Colorado closer Scott Oberg blew his first save of the season Wednesday and the Giants capitalized, winning 2-1 in 11 inning at Oracle Park.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through seven innings until Rockies shortstop Trevor Story hit a solo home run in the top of eighth to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.
Oberg, who was a perfect 6 for 6 in saves entering the game, allowed a double to Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford that drove in pinch runner Austin Slater to tie the game and enter extra innings.
San Francisco outfielder Mike Yastrzemski crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning off of Jairo Diaz to steal the win for the Giants.
Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez had a solid outing, allowing just three hits and striking out six in seven innings of work. Giants starter Dereck Rodriguez was just as good, allowing eight hits in six scoreless innings.
The two teams meet up again Thursday in a battle between Colorado prep pitchers. Kevin Gausman, a Grandview alumnus, will take the mound for San Francisco while former Thomas Jefferson High star Kyle Freeland pitches for Colorado. The game will be live streamed at 2 p.m. MT.
