After selecting Jerry Jeudy in the first round, the Broncos went back to the receiver well Friday to select Penn State’s KJ Hamler in the second round with the 46th overall pick.
The results have been mixed from our readers’ poll. What do national media members think? Here’s a look:
(C+): “Broncos loading up at WR. Super explosive. Loose hips. Good, not great YAC. Fights the football as it’s arriving. Building around Lock makes sense, but this is weird pick because of other needs.”
(B-): The Broncos are doubling up on wideouts after taking Jerry Jeudy in Round 1 and doubling down on Drew Lock’s ability to get the ball vertical. Hamler had drop issues last season, but he’s a deep threat who can split safeties and hit home runs. He’s also a good returner. Interesting decision here.
(C): “The Broncos go wide receiver again after getting Jerry Jeudy in the first round to fully load up for Drew Lock. But they did it at the cost of ignoring some critical needs on defense and the offensive line. Hamler (5-9, 178 pounds) is a smart, smooth route-runner with reliable hands and toughness in tight spaces. He can also help in the return game. But this seems like a superfluous luxury pick considering Denver already has good slot potential from another Penn State product, DaeSean Hamilton. John Elway is clearly going ‘all in’ on offense to try to catch the Chiefs.”
(A-): The Broncos entered the draft with a prototypical “X” receiver in big-bodied perimeter weapon Courtland Sutton. In Round 1 they found a prototypical movement “Z” in the highly refined Jerry Jeudy. And now in Round 2 they’ve added a prototypical super-shifty slot receiver in Hamler. It won’t be hard to predict where Denver’s wide receivers will line up on any given play, but it will be hard to stop them.
