Protests in Denver are entering a second week after the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd was a black man killed when a white police officer knelt on the back of Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes as Floyd screamed “I can’t breathe!” Floyd was later pronounced death and the officers involved have seen been fired and arrested.

On the seventh straight night of demonstrations, thousands gathered at the Colorado Capitol and in Civic Center Park to peacefully protest police brutality. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock joined crowds, saying that “it’s time to get to work” on implementing changes. Police Chief Paul Pazen similarly promised changes in his department but offered few specifics on what that would look like in a virtual community discussion on police accountability.

Thursday morning, Denver hosted a memorial for Floyd at Civic Center Park, honoring his life in song and prayer from 10 to 11 a.m. Later today, there are more protests expected as well as public discussions on the future of education. Check back here for the latest updates on the demonstrations in Denver.
