The Pine Gulch fire, on the Western Slope about 18 miles north of Grand Junction, has grown to about 9,200 acres, fire officials said Wednesday afternoon.

First reported Friday, the wildfire is burning in remote, rough terrain of piñon, juniper, oak and sage brush in Mesa and Garfield counties.

On Wednesday, fire crews on the south side of the fire worked to keep the blaze from moving south of 910 Road, said Troy Hagan, incident commander, on the website InciWeb. Firefighters on the north side of the blaze worked on structure protection and removing fuels along 200 Road.

The fire remains at 5% containment, fire officials said. The fire has been burning north and northeast through areas of thick, heavy and extremely dry vegetation, including a strong fuel-driven run uphill Tuesday onto Horse Mountain. More than 200 firefighters are battling the blaze.
