Warren Jackson isn’t sticking around for CSU spring football.
The Rams’ top NFL prospect that he’s elected to forgo his senior season in order to prepare for the upcoming draft.
The Mission Hills, Calif., native cited the decision by the Mountain West last week to postpone football until 2021 because of the coronavirus as a factor in his decision to leave the program early.
“I know my teammates and I worked harder than ever this spring to be able to go out this fall and do something special,” Jackson, a 6-foot-6 wideout who was last month tapped as the Mountain Westap Offensive Player of the Year, .
“Unfortunately, we were not able to get the chance. I still believe (they) will do something special when they are able to compete again, but I have made the very tough decision to forgo my final year of eligibility and begin training for the NFL Draft.”
Jackson led the Rams last fall in catches (77) and receiving yards (1,119). Over 33 games at CSU, he caught 124 balls for 1,789 yards and 14 scores. NFLDraftScout.com slotted the former Bishop Alemany High School star in the 2021 NFL Draft pool.
The Rams’ football program is currently paused pending investigations over alleged racist and abusive language and reported violations of COVID-19 protocols.
The decision by the MW and the Pac-12 to forgo fall football puts those leagues’ senior and junior draft hopefuls, including those at CSU and CU, in a logistical bind — assuming the NFL’s 2021 calendar is the same as it was in 2020.
Buffs senior wide receiver K.D. Nixon, like Jackson, is expected to draw interest from clubs at the next level. Nixon, a 5-8 senior, declined comment when reached by The Post regarding his draft status late last week.
