Bluebird Backcountry reopened Thursday following a temporary closure resulting from a staff member’s positive COVID-19 test last week.
Located east of Rabbit Ears Pass, Bluebird is a new ski area without lifts that offers “inbounds backcountry skiing,” operating Thursdays through Mondays. The reopening plan was announced Monday in an email that revealed new details concerning the positive test that caused the suspension of operations.
“Last Monday, a staff member noticed that they had a mild fever,” according to the email. “That person immediately left Bluebird to begin quarantining and later received a positive COVID-19 test result. At that point, we chose to cease operations until we could communicate with guests, wait for the rest of our staff to get tested (at CDC-recommended intervals), and isolate folks as needed. Since then, we’ve received negative test results for 17 staff members, which means we are able to operate at full capacity beginning this Thursday.”
In the email, Bluebird co-founders Erik Lambert and Jeff Woodward wrote that in addition to COVID-19 precautions they were already following, they have improved ventilation in buildings and implemented a testing program for staff members. They also plan to place additional barriers between staff and guests at check-in and the rental shop. All staff meetings will now be held outdoors.
