Drivers headed into the mountains on Interstate 70 early this week should expect long delays caused by paving work in Idaho Springs.

The single-lane closures on westbound I-70 begin Sunday afternoon and last into the night, and then begin again at 9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The closures will be between mile markers 241 and 239, and are expected to cause delays as long as two-hours for westbound drivers, according to CDOT, which urged travelers to pass through the area before 9 a.m.

On Monday, the on-ramp to I-70 west at Exit 240 and the off-ramp from I-70 west at Exit 239 will be also closed from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

I-70 will be fully open Wednesday through Sunday, according to CDOT, and the paving can’t be done at night because of the cold temperatures.

“This paving work is critical to ensuring westbound I-70 is safe for the winter season,” a statement from the agency read.
