A man was shot and killed by Lakewood police after he pointed a gun at officers, according to police.

The incident unfolded at about noon Tuesday when a man was seen trying to get into a locked car on a dealer lot on West Colfax Avenue near Garrison Street, said John Romero, a police spokesman.

Officers responded to Prestige Audi, but did not find the suspect. About the same time, a call reporting a robbery at a nearby Safeway, 9160 W. Colfax Ave., came in and police rushed there.

The Safeway robbery call turned out to be unfounded, but police spotted a man nearby matching the description of the suspect from the car dealership. That man ran from officers into a nearby neighborhood.

When officers caught up to the man, in the 1500 block of Glen Dee Drive, he pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officers, Romero said. Officers shot the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect’s gun was recovered. An investigation is ongoing.
