A man skiing at Eldora Mountain Resort on Thursday hit a tree and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident happened just before noon, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses told investigators the skier was on the Corona Run when he fell and slid at a high speed, striking a tree, a news release said.

A medical helicopter was requested but couldn’t safely land because of strong winds in the area. The name of the skier, a man in his 50s, was not released. An investigation is ongoing.
