Colorado wildlife officers and firefighters rescued a cow elk Sunday evening from a swimming pool west of Loveland.

The elk, which weighed about 500 pounds, had wandered into a pool off of Bitterbush Way and the soaking wet animal seemed intent on staying put near a tarp that partially covered the water.

Three wildlife officers and personnel with the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority used straps to patiently tug the animal out of the cold water, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Once out of the pool, and after a warming period, the uninjured elk walked off to rejoin a herd. Wildlife officials expect the cow to fully recover.
