Letecia Stauch, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 11-year-old stepson last year in Colorado Springs, is competent to stand trial on charges related to Gannon Stauch’s killing, a district court judge rule Tuesday.
Stauch underwent a second mental health evaluation at the request of her attorneys after an initial exam found her to be competent for trial. Judge Gregory Werner on Tuesday said the results of the second evaluation agreed with the first, allowing the case to move toward trial.
Her next court appearance is set for March 11.
Stauch initially reported Gannon’s disappearance on Jan. 27, 2020, prompting a massive search from local authorities.
Investigators suspect she killed her stepson in his bedroom on the day she reported him missing, according to her arrest affidavit.
Stauch was arrested March 2 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and remains believed to belong to Gannon were found in the Florida panhandle 16 days later.
Authorities have not said how the remains ended up in Florida.
