Rockies 11, Diamondbacks 4 (8 innings)
Tuesday at Salt River Fields
On the mound: Chi Chi Gonzalez allowed a solo homer over three innings in his third start of the spring. Jose Mujica and Robert Stephenson followed with a clean inning apiece, but right-hander Jairo Diaz was tagged for three runs on five hits in the sixth.
At the plate: Colorado went up 2-0 in the second after C.J. Cron doubled and Brendan Rodgers homered. Then, back-to-back solo homers by Ryan McMahon and Trevor Story made it 4-1 in the third. Cron added a homer of his own, an opposite-field shot, in the fifth. Prospect Colton Welker tacked on an RBI double in the sixth.
Worth noting: Josh Fuentes, battling for the starting first base job, snagged a liner off the bat of Ketel Marte, then made a diving tag to double off the runner on first base.
“That thing was scalded, and Josh jumped up, snagged it and immediately knew he had a chance to get the runner,” McMahon said. “It was a great play, and it was a lot harder than he made it look.”
