Rockies 7, Padres 5 (7 innings)
Wednesday at Salt River Fields
On the mound: Southpaw Austin Gomber continues to impress while pressing to earn the rotation’s fifth and final spot. In his third Cactus League start, Gomber threw three scoreless innings. He has not allowed a run this spring. San Diego did its damage off left-handed reliever Phillip Diehl (three runs/19.64 spring training ERA) and right-hander Carlos Estevez (two runs/21.00).
At the plate: Ryan McMahon hit his second homer of spring, a solo shot in the second, and Colton Welker followed that up with a three-run bomb in the sixth, his first. Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-3.
Worth noting: Right-handed sidearm reliever Justin Lawrence, coming off a PED suspension in 2020, threw a scoreless inning. He’s made three scoreless appearances so far, and overcame two walks on Wednesday.
