A man hiding in a field was shot by an Elbert County deputy on Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident unfolded about 12:30 p.m., when a deputy tried to stop a driver near the 9000 block of Colorado 86 for a suspected speeding violation, according to a news release. The driver of the pickup, which did not have license plates, pulled into the Kiowa Industrial Park, got out of the truck and fled on foot.

The man ran into a field, and other deputies arrived, setting up a perimeter and a search. A deputy fired at the man, hitting him in the stomach. The sheriff’s office did not say whether the man was armed. The man was taken to a hospital and was recovering after surgery, police said.

The shooting is under investigation. The name of the deputy was not released, and the suspect was not identified.
