The man who was shot and killed by a Weld County deputy Friday night has been identified.

The Weld Country Coroner’s Office on Monday said Steven Michael Kielian, 32, was the man shot.

A report of a disturbance after 5:40 p.m. Friday on the 26000 block of County Road 70 triggered a response from deputies. On the scene, a woman outside of the residence claimed she had been assaulted by a man still inside the home. The woman informed deputies that he had access to firearms, county officials say.

Kielian left the scene on foot, and deputies attempted to slow him down with less-lethal rounds. Eventually, Kielian fired on deputies, who returned fire and struck him.

Kielian was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The coroner’s office suggests Kielian was near or at his girlfriend’s residence when the incident occurred.

The shooting is still under investigation.
