Colorado’s civics education courses for preschool, elementary and secondary students in public schools are getting a makeover under a bill signed Thursday by Gov. Jared Polis.
requires the State Board of Education to review current civics education standards and, if necessary, change them so that the full “history, culture and social contributions of minorities” is taught. Civics education must also be changed to cover specific workings of U.S. and state government — from the constitutions to how the branches of government interact, from how amendments are made to the effects Supreme Court decisions have on modern life.
GOP Sen. Don Coram of Montrose told The Denver Post’s Saja Hindi earlier in the session that the goal with this legislation was to see “a more informed electorate.”
