Reservations are now being taken for Staunton State Park’s “track chairs” program, which has offered a means for people who are disabled to enjoy the park’s trails since 2017.
The chairs have treads to navigate trail surfaces and . The program is set to resume June 4, with chairs provided by the park’s volunteer partner, Friends of Staunton. The park is located 6 miles south of Conifer via U.S. 285.
Use of the chairs is free of charge, but visitors must pay park entry fees ($10 per vehicle).
“Being able to offer the therapeutic benefits of the outdoors to all of our visitors is truly rewarding,” said Zach Taylor, manager of the park, in a Colorado Parks and Wildlife news release. “We now have four track chairs and one Grit Freedom chair (an all-terrain wheelchair).”
Individual trips will be run Fridays through Sundays, and group trips can be arranged Mondays through Thursdays. Three trails have been designated for track chairs, ranging from 2 to 5 miles in length. An Adaptive Recreation Weekend is scheduled June 12-13 to showcase adaptive outdoor sports including track chair “hiking,” fishing, archery and more.
