A 6-year-old boy died after he was caught in a residential fire early Wednesday morning, according to Aurora Fire Rescue.

The fire was reported at about 12:30 a.m. in a townhome at 2032 South Paris Way, the agency said. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the boy, and he was hospitalized with fatal injuries.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Both the fire department and Aurora police are investigating the case, and that investigation is expected to last several weeks, the fire department said in a news release.

The boy has not been publicly identified.

The fire at the townhome did not spread to other units, the fire department said. Four people were displaced from the unit that burned.
