At age 64, Bud Black is old enough to remember “groovy.”

And although the Rockies’ manager didn’t use that word to describe Sunday’s events at Petco Park in San Diego, it certainly would have fit.

Black became the 62nd manager in big-league history to manage 2,000 career games, and the Rockies rewarded him with a 3-1 victory that clinched their first series victory on the road this season. Plus, Black got to wear the groovy and gaudy gold chain that’s presented to the game’s MVP after each Rockies’ win.

“I’m so grateful to so many people in this game, to be able to last this long,” Black said. “The coaches who have been with me in my two places (San Diego and Colorado), and the players, have always been there and put it out there for me.”

Black added, “I’m proud of this group. I will remember this one. I will.”

Veteran outfielder Charlie Blackmon draped the chain around Black’s neck.

“After a win, we always have a few nice moments in the clubhouse,” Black said. “Chuck threw it on me because I’m an old guy with some experience and with a lot of games. It was a cool moment in the clubhouse.”

Owings rebounds. Veteran utility player Chris Owings struggled when he first came off the 60-day injured list after recovering from an injured hand but he’s now heating up.

After getting two hits on Saturday, Owings hit a pinch-hit, solo home run Sunday that proved to be the difference in the game.

“We hope (he’s back),” Black said. “He’s got sneaky power, so let’s hope this has turned it around for him. He was in a little bit of a funk, but he’s a streaky player. Hopefully, these last couple of games have revitalized him and got him back on track.”

Footnotes. Infielders Ryan McMahon and Brendan Rodgers missed their second consecutive game because of a stomach virus that’s spread through the team. Black also said that right-handed reliever Carlos Estevez came down with the bug on Sunday. Black expects all three to be okay when Colorado resumes play on Friday after the all-star break. … When the Rockies host the Dodgers on Friday, right-hander Antonio Senzatela will likely be the starter, followed by right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez and lefty Kyle Freeland.
