Construction of the Central 70 project nears an upcoming shift of all six lanes of Interstate 70 traffic from an old raised viaduct, shown at left, to a new below-grade roadway, right, between Brighton and Colorado boulevards. Construction work was photographed on May 11, 2021. The “Mile High Shift” will allow for demolition of the viaduct and construction of the rest of the lowered highway. The major highway project is funded with federal dollars, as the state struggles to meet maintenance needs with existing revenues.

Interstate 70 will be closed, traveling westbound through a key portion of Denver over the weekend. Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, the Colorado Department of Transportation will close I-70 from Interstate 270 to Colorado Boulevard. The closure comes as CDOT will pave that stretch of road in the Central 70 Project zone.

The closure is finally happening this weekend after it was initially planned for July, but an oil shortage delayed it until last weekend. CDOT backed out of the paving project last weekend due to the weather.

Travelers can detour around the area by taking I-270 to Interstate 76 to Interstate 25 back onto I-70.

The highway will fully reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.
