The FCC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, conducted the first-ever nationwide test of the national Emergency Alert System. If the phone buzzes, the TV makes that screeching sound or the radio cuts out for a moment around lunchtime on Wednesday, do not fret.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is conducting a nationwide emergency alert test between 12:20 and 12:50 p.m.

FEMA is working with the Federal Communications Commission to test both Wireless Emergency Alerts and the Emergency Alert System.

The two-portion test should be similar to that of the monthly test done by the state.

During that window, normal programming may get interrupted to play the test message in either English or Spanish for the EAS test. At the same time, the WEA test is directed at your cellphone.

If you want to opt-in to emergency alerts on your phone, FEMA directs you through that process .
