Denver International Airport took journalists behind construction walls Wednesday to show off progress on expansion projects that by next spring will add 39 new gates and dozens of food and retail outlets across all three concourses.

The $2.1 billion program broke ground in 2018 and was expanded last year after United and Southwest signed leases for all the new gates. During a tour of the Concourse C expansion, where 16 new gates are under construction, DIA senior vice president Stu Williams said the airport’s original gate areas were “spectacular compared to most airports” when it opened in 1995.

“But this new design for these expansions takes it to a whole new level,” he said, with higher ceilings, more natural light, modern amenities and new outdoor patios, including at the end of C.

The first new gates opened in late 2020 on Concourse B’s west end; its east-end expansion is on track to open late this year. Concourse C’s east end is expected to open in March or April, while the west end of Concourse A should be finished soon after.
