Fire officials in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge are conducting prescribed burns beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day, refuge officials tweeted.
Smoke and flames may be visible from 56th Avenue, officials said. There’s no need to call 911.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to burn up to 2,727 acres over a two-week period that began last week, the agency said in the news release.
“The purpose of prescribed burning is to reinvigorate the growth of native prairie vegetation, reduce accumulated litter, manage efforts for weed control and improve habitat to sustain wildlife,” officials said, adding that the burns help reduce wildfire risk.
Prescribed burning is planned in the southeast portion of the today. Burning will begin around 10:00 AM and will continue throughout the day. Smoke and flames may be visible from 56th Avenue. There is no need to report (or call 911). Updates will follow.
