A two-car crash in Golden on Friday morning killed one person and four were hospitalized, the driver who allegedly caused the crash was speeding at about 100 mph, police said.
At about 4:50 a.m. the driver of a silver Chevrolet Malibu was speeding — between 90 and 100 mph — eastbound on 6th Avenue, police said. The posted speed limit in the area is 45 mph.
An officer, who spotted the Malibu, activated emergency lights and attempted to catch up to the speeder to make a traffic stop, according to a news release. The Malibu driver ran a red light at Colfax and slammed into a Chevrolet SUV, which burst into flames.
Three people in the SUV were able to get out of the vehicle and the Golden officer used an extinguisher to put out flames on two who were burning, the release said. The officer then pulled the pair further away from the flaming SUV.
Firefighters and other emergency responders arrived and five people, three from the SUV and two from the Malibu, were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries, police said. One person in the Malibu died of injuries suffered in the crash.
The busy intersection was shut down for an extended time because of the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
