A 24-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for attempted murder and attempted sexual assault after hitting his friend in the head with a tortilla pan while she slept, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
An Adams County judge sentenced Deshawn Avila on Tuesday based on the state’s indeterminate sentencing for sex offenders. Avila will serve at least 20 years of parole upon his release from prison, the district attorney’s office said.
A jury on Feb. 11 found Avila guilty of the September 2018 attack.
The district attorney’s office said that Avila and the victim went to a bar in Denver before returning to the victim’s home to sleep. Avila slept in the victim’s bed, while the victim slept in her young son’s bedroom.
The victim later told authorities that she considered Avila a cousin, though they are not related, the district attorney’s office said.
According to the district attorney’s office, during the night, Avila went into the child’s bedroom and hit the victim’s head with a metal tortilla pan.
