Fire and police responded to the explosion at the corner of North First Street between Park and Uncompahgre avenues, police said.
Residents have been asked to avoid the area as firefighters work at the scene.
The explosion happened at Hartman Brothers, a medical supply company, . The building was evacuated.
Four people were injured in the explosion and subsequent fire, according to the Montrose Fire Protection District. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
