Red flag warnings are coming to Denver and most of the Front Range and plains on Friday in what the National Weather Service is describing as “extreme fire weather conditions.”

Thursday’s warm, sunny weather is expected to reach a high of 78 degrees, with 5 mph to 10 mph winds and gusts as high as 16 mph. Park County is under a red flag warning from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, the weather service said.

Overnight winds are expected to pick up slightly before Friday’s windy, dry conditions.

Friday is expected to reach a high of 82 degrees, with winds reaching 6 mph to 16 mph before increasing to 19 mph to 29 mph later in the day. Gusts could reach 44 mph, the National Weather Service said.

At the same time, the winds are expected to pick up and the relative humidity is expected to plunge to 7% to 10%, creating extremely dangerous conditions for fires. The red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday covers much of the Denver area, the southern foothills, the Interstate 25 corridor and all of the Eastern Plains.

Drivers on Interstate 70 and Interstate 76 east and northeast of Denver, as well as many other highways across eastern Colorado, should be prepared for road closures due to dust and low visibility.

The next chance of rain comes Friday night and Saturday. The high on Saturday should drop to around 61, with a slight chance of rain after noon, followed by a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 11 a.m. Sunday.

The high on Sunday is expected to reach 57, with a chance of rain and the possibility of a thunderstorm continuing through the day and evening, when the low should drop to around 34.
