A student brought a gun in their backpack Monday to STRIVE Prep-RISE, a charter school in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood, but it was confiscated on Monday, school officials said.
The student, who was not identified, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a weapon on school grounds, Jay Casillas, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department, said Tuesday.
Denver police officials initially had said the student only was issued a citation.
Classmates reported the student to an employee at the school and filed a report with Safe2Tell, the state’s reporting system for school threats, STRIVE Prep spokeswoman Julia Virnstein said.
“No one was hurt,” she said, adding, “We always want to encourage our students to report anything unsafe.”
Denver police and security with Denver Public Schools are both investigating the incident, Virnstein said.
