The son of the Regional Transportation District police chief was killed in the line of duty Saturday night while pursuing a suspect in Philadelphia.

Temple University police Officer Christopher Fitzgerald was shot and killed Saturday night. He is the son of RTD police Chief Joel Fitzgerald Sr.

“RTD is deeply saddened to learn about the tragic and unimaginable loss of Chief Fitzgerald’s son Christopher, a police officer, who was killed in the line of duty,” the transportation agency said in a statement. “We send our deepest condolences to the entire Fitzgerald family and all those mourning Christopher.”

Christopher Fitzgerald, 31, leaves behind a wife and four children, according to Temple University. He joined the university’s police department in 2021.

“Officer Fitzgerald loved being a police officer, and he will always be remembered for his fearlessness in fighting crime and his compassion for his community,” according to .

Philadelphia police arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of killing Fitzgerald, according to
