HealthONE is among the largest healthcare systems in the metro Denver area, with more than 11,000 colleagues working in seven acute care hospitals, a pediatric hospital, a rehabilitation hospital, several free-standing emergency departments, numerous ambulatory surgery centers, CareNow urgent care and occupational medicine clinics, physician practices, and imaging centers.

It’s also one of The Denver Post’s Top Workplaces at a time when the healthcare workforce faces significant strain.

“HCA Healthcare and HealthONE are leading the industry in addressing these challenges today and as we look to the future,” says Suzanne Kelley, human resources vice president for HealthONE.

“Now more than ever, we are committed to meaningful workforce development through investment in training, retention and policy legislation.”

Keeping employees happy and healthy

HealthOne values the safety of its employees, which is why it provides 24/7 onsite security and training to help manage potentially violent situations.

Moreover, it cares deeply about its employees’ mental and emotional well-being.

To that end, it established a variety of resources, including:

• Nurse Care – a free and confidential counseling program designed to help nurses with anxiety management
• Optum Wellbeing Resources – up to five free counseling sessions per topic per year for employees and their immediate family members
• Talkspace mobile app – secure and confidential access to licensed therapists via text or live video from phone or desktop
• Sanvello Premium mobile app – daily mood tracking tools along with coping skills support through its community
• Thrive Forward Toolkit – wellbeing resources such as articles, tools, strategies and videos to assist colleagues in thriving personally while providing caregiving services.

Recruiting new employees

To battle the workforce shortage, HealthONE established several partnerships with academic institutions.

Regis University offers HealthONE colleagues a 10% tuition discount in eligible degree programs. Colorado Community Colleges and Metropolitan State University offer clinical rotations, mentorships, shared research projects, career panels, and scholarship support.

HealthONE also works with programs to expose diverse populations to healthcare job opportunities and started academic partnerships with area high schools to invest in and develop a healthcare pipeline for future patient care technologists (PCTs).

“We hire people right out of high school and help them grow in their careers,” Kelley says.

HealthONE has also been named America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women by Newsweek in 2023 and is the only healthcare system in Colorado to receive the award. As part of the HealthONE network, Centennial Hospital, The Medical Center of Aurora, North Suburban Medical Center, Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, Rose Medical Center, Sky Ridge Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, and Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital work together to provide a higher level of care.
