The man who in Boulder on Thursday has been identified as 63-year-old David Zabel, according to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.

Zabel was scrambling off-trail with a family member just west of the Flatirons when he reportedly fell about 15 feet down a rock face before tumbling an additional 50 feet down a steep hillside, according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office release.

The family member told a dispatcher that Zabel was unconscious and did not have a pulse, according to the release.

Bystanders and first responders attempted life-saving measures, but an on-scene emergency room physician pronounced the man dead on scene.

The coroner’s office said the cause and manner of death are pending further investigation. No foul play is suspected, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
