Reportedly, it was Clive DJ Kool Herc Campbell who started mixing funk and soul in the community room of the building around 1973. The legendary rent-controlled building is planned to be converted into market-rate housing, a decision that provoked a lot of controversy from affordable housing campaigners, who hope to give the birthplace of hip hop a landmark status and continue to maintain it as an affordable housing for its long-term residents.
