Denverites planning to spend Thanksgiving day eating turkey and all the fixings may want to continue any festivities indoors into the evening and avoid driving.

Thursday’s weather forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies during the day with a high of 41 degrees and a 40% chance of snow after 4 p.m. with wind gusts as high as 15 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow accumulation of about a half inch is possible, but the chance of snow in the evening goes up to 100%. The temperature is expected to dip to about 18 degrees, with wind gusts as high as 16 mph and snow accumulation of about 1 to 2 inches.

The National Weather Service issued a from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Saturday, warning of snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches and wind gusts as high as 35 mph for portions of central, east central and northeast Colorado.

The advisory cautions that roads are expected to be “slick and hazardous,” mostly affecting Friday morning and evening work commutes.

A notes that a winter storm warning will be in effect for the northern Front Range foothills and nearby plains to Fort Collins and Boulder, with the heaviest snow forecast to affect the lower foothills and lower elevations from Boulder County north.

Snow is expected to decrease Friday morning but lighter snow and flurries are likely through Friday night, according to the weather service, eventually moving from the northwest to southeast on Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to stay cold, with highs expected in the 20s on Friday and Saturday and lows in the single digits in the Denver metro and below zero in the mountains and high valleys.
