An Adams County man was sentenced to life in prison without parole by an Adams County judge on Monday for fatally stabbing his brother with a sword in 2021, . The sentencing comes nearly two weeks after a jury convicted Kenneth Sargent of first-degree murder over the incident, a charge he pleaded not guilty to for reason of insanity.

According to the office, the 62-year-old Sargent stabbed his brother, Roy Sargent, with a sword amidst a verbal dispute at a home along West 118th Place in Westminster in June 2021. Roy Sargent was stabbed once in the heart and once in the arm, the office says, with the altercation taking place on the home’s front porch.

A neighbor who witnessed the dispute told police that he heard Kenneth Sargent say to Roy Sargent, “I’m going to kill you,” according to the release.

“This was a horrific and tragic case,” Adams County District Attorney Brian Mason said in the release. “The defendant used a sword — in broad daylight — to take the life of his brother. I appreciate the hard work of my team on this difficult case. My thoughts are and will continue to be with the family who had to endure a level of pain and suffering that is truly impossible to comprehend.”
