Austyn Modrzewski was named the Gatorade Colorado Football Player of the Year on Wednesday, becoming the first player from Mountain Vista High School to win the award in its 39-year history.
The junior quarterback carved up opposing defenses this fall, throwing for 3,675 yards and 41 touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles (9-3) to the Class 5A state quarterfinals. He also ran for 334 yards and five TDs.
A Denver Post All-Colorado selection, Modrzewski already has scholarship offers from Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky, . In addition, he carries a weighted 3.57 grade-point average and volunteers as a youth football coach and mentor.
“Austyn makes that offense run,” Castle View coach Eric Handke said in a news release announcing the award. “He has some talented receivers, but Austyn has made some spectacular throws to them this year that I haven’t seen hardly any quarterbacks make in my 25 years of coaching.”
Among the recent Gatorade Colorado Football Players of the Year are Cherry Creek’s Blake Purchase in 2022, Valor Christian’s Gavin Sawchuk in 2020 and ’21, and Columbine’s Tanner Hollens in 2019.
