Two men died and a vehicle burned in the head-on crash Friday morning that forced the closure of northbound U.S. 287 north of Longmont for more than four hours, according to the .
A 36-year-old man from Loveland driving alone in a brown Dodge Ram northbound near the intersection with Yellowstone Road was pronounced dead at the scene. A 33-year-old man from Longmont who was driving alone in a white Chevrolet Silverado southbound also died at the scene.
Their names weren’t released.
The crash occurred at 8:42 a.m. after the Ram veered out of its lane and collided with the front of the Silverado, CSP Trooper Gabriel Moltrer said on Monday.
The Loveland man wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. The Longmont man wore one, he said.
“Excessive speed is suspected,” Moltrer said, adding that alcohol and drugs did not play a role.
The Silverado ignited after the crash. set up orange cones and barricades, closing northbound lanes of the highway until shortly after 1 p.m., Moltrer said, as troopers investigated the wreckage.
