Agency approved more than 60,000 personalized license plates last year

Drivers who want to let people know they are “VEGANAF” or to be cautious about “FARTS” are out of luck, according to an extensive list of rejected vanity license plates released by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles on Friday.

More Colorado drivers than ever are applying for personalized license plates, the agency said in a news release, which there is no shortage of rejected license plate requests with rude, crude and occasionally odd phrases — more than 1,000 in 2023 alone.

The number of personalized license plate requests approved by the DMV nearly doubled in 2023, with more than 60,000 making the cut.

The more than 1,000 requests rejected by DMV officials are mostly as expected, including endless variations of body parts, four-letter curse words and sex, according to a list released by the agency Friday.

Highlights from the 32-page list of 2023 rejects that can be published in a newspaper include “HELLRZN,” “P1MP1N,” “KILLER,” “METHLAB” and “5TUDMFN.”

The full list of rejected license plates from 2023 is , and drivers worried about their application being rejected can review the that are automatically denied.

The “offensive and omit” list is developed using the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators recommendations and known offensive words and terms and is periodically reviewed. Customers can appeal a decision with the Colorado Department of Revenue’s hearings division, according to the agency.

Personalized license plates cost $60 and or at a county motor vehicle office.
