A 57-year-old man was found dead Saturday afternoon at the bottom of a rock formation known as “The Slab,” which is near the intersection of the Shanahan and Mesa trails in south Boulder, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Neither the man’s name nor the cause and manner of death were released. Detectives from the sheriff’s office conducted an initial investigation along with the Boulder County Coroner’s Office. The trails are popular with hikers.

Search and rescue teams looked for the man around 1 p.m. after receiving a report from a concerned family member who was not able to reach him by phone.

Representatives from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder County Mounted Search and Rescue, Boulder Emergency Squad, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and the Boulder County Coroner’s Office were involved in the search and recovery.
