U.S. 550 reopened after it was closed in both directions Wednesday morning because a boulder crashed onto the highway near Ouray overnight, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The highway, which reopened Wednesday afternoon, was closed over Red Mountain Pass, CDOT officials said. The pass runs between Shrine Road near Silverton and Amphiteatre Road near Ouray.

A from CDOT officials posted Wednesday morning shows the boulder, which is taller than the bed of a pickup truck, blocking both lanes of the two-lane highway.

Crews needed to break the boulder up to remove it from the highway, which took several hours, .
