Colorado’s mountains will see several inches of fresh snowfall Sunday as winds whip through the lower elevation foothills and Eastern Plains, according to the National Weather Service.
The most snow is expected to fall across northern Colorado’s Park Range mountains, . Mount Zirkel, the range’s highest summit, will see up to 8 inches of snowfall on Sunday.
Other areas in the Rocky Mountains — including Cameron Pass between the Medicine Bow range and the Never Summer range, Muddy Pass along U.S. 40 and Rabbit Ears Pass near Steamboat Springs — are expected to see between 3 and 6 inches of snowfall, forecasters said.
Little to no snow is expected to accumulate on Colorado’s southern mountains, including the Sangre de Cristo range and San Juan range, according to NWS forecasters.
According to an , strong and potentially damaging winds up to 75 mph will be possible in the foothills and lower-elevation mountains on Sunday.
Forecasters said the highest threat will be along and north of Interstate 70.
Gusty winds of 35 mph to 45 mph will also be possible across the plains Sunday afternoon and wind near the Colorado-Wyoming border could reach up to 60 mph, according to the weather alert.
Snow will wrap up in the mountains in the afternoon, but windy conditions could create blowing snow and white-out conditions, especially along mountain passes, forecasters said.
Gusty winds will continue overnight and diminish by Monday, forecasters said in the outlook. A weak storm system will bring light snow back to the mountains on Tuesday.
