A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after two men were near Denver’s Park Hill and Clayton neighborhoods, police said Monday.
Fabian Vasquez allegedly shot at a Denver Police Department officer as he ran away from the convenience store near 35th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard where police say he shot two people after an argument early Monday morning.
Vasquez and an 18-year-old man arrived at the 7-Eleven around the same time as two other men and the groups got into an argument, department officials said Monday.
The argument escalated into a gunfight, Police Chief Ron Thomas , and Vasquez fled the scene after the shooting. An officer in the area heard the gunshots, went to the store and chased after Vasquez, who shot at him, and the officer returned fire before Vasquez escaped.
One of the men, identified by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner as 30-year-old Ernesto Delgado, died at the scene and the other, 42-year-old Eric Delgado, was pronounced dead at the hospital, Denver police said.
Police set up a perimeter and arrested Vasquez nearby in the 3300 block of Jackson Street. He was not injured by the officer who shot at him but was taken to the hospital for a bite wound from a police K9 and prolonged exposure to the cold.
He is in custody on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
The 18-year-old who was with Vasquez was arrested on suspicion of possessing a gun as a previous offender, and investigators are still looking into his involvement in the shooting,
The officer who fired at Vasquez was transferred to a position that doesn’t interact with the public while the shooting is investigated by the Colorado State Patrol and Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
