Two people died Saturday after a plane crashed and caught fire in a field north of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield.

North Metro Fire Rescue District spokesperson Sara Farris said firefighters were notified of an aircraft in distress at 10:02 a.m. Saturday, shortly after the pilot took off from the airport and tried to return. The crash northeast of Midway Boulevard and Brainard Drive was reported one minute later.

The agency wrote in at 10:24 a.m. that firefighters had extinguished the blaze at the crash site.

Farris said there were “no survivors” from the plane, which she said was small and not a passenger airliner.

Two people were onboard the twin-engine Beechcraft 95 plane when it crashed just short of the runway at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Steven Kulm confirmed Sunday.

FAA officials and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

The two victims will be identified by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.

Boulder County sheriff’s deputies remained at the crash scene overnight.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
