Nearly 800 flights delayed at DIA amid early morning storms, FAA ground stop

Ground stop will revert to a ground delay for low cloud cover

Hundreds of flights were delayed Tuesday morning at Denver International Airport after a wave of storms, including up to tennis-ball-sized hail, swept across Colorado.

As of 1:20 p.m., the airport was under a ground stop issued by the Federal Aviation Administration for thunderstorms in the area, according to the agency’s .

The ground stop was expected to lift, reverting back to a ground delay, just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, FAA officials said.

At 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, 792 flights in and out of DIA had been delayed and four had been canceled, according to flight tracking data from .

Southwest delayed the most flights, 330, and 211 United flights failed to leave the gate on time, according to FlightAware.

Other delays included 138 SkyWest flights, 30 Delta flights, 27 American Airlines flights and 19 Frontier flights. Nine airlines delayed between one and seven flights on Tuesday.

United canceled three flights and Southwest canceled one, according to FlightAware.

After the morning storms ended, the FAA issued a ground delay at DIA for “low ceilings,” which refers to the lowest level of cloud cover, .

The low ceiling ground delay will resume after the ground stop lifts and is expected to last through 9 p.m. Tuesday.
