I-70 reopens near Eagle as firefighters make progress on Red Canyon fire

Pre-evacuations ordered for Red Canyon, Horn Ranch north of the interstate

Interstate 70 reopened near Wolcott after a wildfire closed the highway in both directions for three hours Wednesday night, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

All lanes of eastbound I-70 are open and all but one lane of westbound I-70 are open,

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office posted about the on Facebook just after 5 p.m. Evacuations that were ordered for people living near Red Canyon and Horn Ranch north of the highway, between I-70 mile markers 151 and 154, were downgraded to pre-evacuations at 9 p.m., according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit’s Facebook .

A firefighting helicopter arrived at the fire by 5:45 p.m. Sheriff’s officials did not say what started the fire.

Fire officials initially said the 10-acre fire is burning four miles west of Wolcott was “quickly advancing,” but crews managed to stop forward progress by 8 p.m., the fire management unit

There were additional engines, a hotshot crew and aircraft en route to the fire Wednesday evening.
