DPS to close 13 schools Thursday due to ‘extreme heat’

Bryant Webster and Johnson Elementary will have early dismissals

Denver Public Schools will close 13 of its schools Thursday because of anticipated “extreme heat,” the district announced.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high near 99 degrees in the Denver area Thursday.

Another two schools — Johnson Elementary and Bryant Webster ECE-8 — will release students early because of the expected high temperatures.

Bryant Webster will release students at 12:20 p.m. and Johnson Elementary will dismiss its classes at 12:30 p.m. Both schools will run their normal bus services and provide students with lunch, DPS officials said in a news release Wednesday.

  • Park Hill Elementary

  • Stephen Knight Center for Early Education
  • University Park Elementary
  • Vista Academy

Not every DPS school has air conditioning, although the district has been working to add cooling to remaining buildings.

The nearly $1 billion bond passed by Denver voters last year earmarked $240 million toward the districtap air conditioning initiative.
