DIA ground stop lifted, hundreds of flights delayed as thunderstorms hit metro Denver

Nearly 600 flights were delayed or canceled at Denver International Airport on Tuesday as thunderstorms dropped significant rain across the east metro.

The ordered a ground stop at DIA at 4 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. because of the storms, the agency said in an alert. Arriving flights were delayed by an hour on average because of thunderstorms.

There were 569 flight delays and 12 canceled flights as of 7:25 p.m., including 227 delays on United, 147 delays on Southwest and 136 on SkyWest.

A was active for parts of northeast Colorado because of excessive rainfall, including DIA as well as central Adams, north central Araphoe, northeastern Denver and south central Weld counties, according to the National Weather Service.
