A fast-moving grass fire charred 11 acres and burned a home and an outbuilding in northwest Arvada on Thursday afternoon, forcing mandatory evacuations and closing roads near Leyden Rock open space for several hours.

Fire crews had full containment on the fire just before 2 p.m., Arvada police said in . Firefighters were still working to put out one home that was on fire, and a shed was also damaged in the fire, Arvada Fire Department spokesperson Deanna Harrington said.

There were no injuries reported by firefighters or the public, she said. Mandatory evacuation and pre-evacuation orders were lifted as of 2:30 p.m., but people living nearby can expect to see firefighters in the area overnight as they mop up and make sure the fire is completely out.

Arvada Fire Department crews were called to an outside fire near West 82nd Avenue and Quaker Street at 12:30 p.m. and quickly realized they needed more support, Harrington said.

The combination of extremely dry fuels and the topography allowed the fire to run uphill and threaten homes, she said.

Police ordered mandatory evacuations for people living on 84th Place at Quaker Circle and Quartz Street and pre-evacuation warnings for homes in Leyden Ranch from Orion Way to Moss Circle.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Harrington said.
