Searchers found the body of a man, presumed to be a missing kayaker in Carter Lake, 24 hours after a 911 call reported him “in distress.”

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reported about 5:30 p.m. Friday that crews had just recovered a man from the waters at the lake west of Loveland.

The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release his name and cause of death in the future.

A person who was at Carter Lake on Thursday called 911 at 5:09 p.m. to report a man was “in distress” in the water near a kayak on the south side of the lake, according to information from the sheriff’s office. Rescue and dive crews that rushed to the scene immediately began looking, finding the kayak but not the man, who initial reports said was not wearing a personal flotation device.

A specialty team from Colorado Parks and Wildlife joined the search, which lasted into the night on Thursday and all day on Friday with the south end of the lake closed during the efforts. About 5:30 p.m. Friday, the sheriff’s office reported that a body had been recovered from the lake.
