A handgun and an airsoft gun were confiscated at a Colorado Springs high school Friday morning, law enforcement officials said.
No one was injured in the incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Mesa Ridge High School officials were “made aware of possible guns on campus” shortly after 9 a.m., principal Joshua Trahan said in a statement to families. The two weapons were then found and confiscated by the school resource officer and other safety personnel.
A spokesman for the sheriff’s office did not immediately respond when asked if anyone had been arrested. In its statement, the office said deputies were at the school and that the investigation was ongoing.
The incident comes two days after a 16-year-old student shot two schoolmates and then fatally shot himself at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County. On Thursday, an erroneous report of a man with a gun sent two Boulder schools into lockdown. The man was actually a runner wearing a weighted vest and holding a cellphone.
“We understand how scary this situation is for our students, staff and families, especially given the recent tragedy at Evergreen High School,” Trahan wrote. “We want to assure our community that we take matters of safety and security very seriously. Our priority is to keep students and staff safe while at school.”
