Fort Carson wildfire now 90% contained on 5,500 acres of El Paso County

Large Impact fire is not posing threat to public, officials said

Firefighters gained 90% containment on a wildfire burning on 5,500 acres of Fort Carson in El Paso County, officials said Friday.

The Large Impact fire on the army base’s training ground in El Paso County is almost completely contained, . There is no threat to the public.

The fire grew rapidly from 200 acres on Thursday to several thousand acres overnight because of warm temperatures and high winds,

Smoke from the blaze has been visible sometimes in Colorado Springs, but on Wednesday asked people to call 911 only if they saw visible flames.

Fort Carson officials did not immediately return a call Friday morning.
